fools mission #1

Blackfrost skirted the edges of the thunderpath. It's acrid scent clinging to the air, hanging like a dense fog as he darted along the oily grass. Every now and again a monster would rush past, emitting it's deafening roar. This was one of his favorite haunts. Few cats, be they clan or otherwise, dared to come so close to the pathway of monsters. This was also a crafty way into the RiverClan's territory.

The scent of the place clung to fur as heavily as the sent of twolegs. A careful warrior could mix the two to make a convincing mask. Combining this with the talents honed by the his clan had served him well on many such excursions. This trip held a different significance than his usual affairs.  He was not usually one to make boasts, but to hear the other warriors speaking so proudly over the littlest nothing.

Oh I caught myself an adder......
Oh I fought two thunderclan hunters....
Oh I was the apprentice of such and such and they taught me this secret..blah..blah....

His fur raised in contempt just remembering the prideful speeches. That had been the cause of his adventure. His pride too needed stroking it had seemed. So in rasped whisper he had claimed that he alone out of all of the WindClan could travel in a wide circle hunting in the territories of all clans. Not only this but that he could bring back any such evidence the assembly would require. And all within the  rising of three suns. His bold words required action and so he was challenged to recant his words in shame or go forth and hunt.  

He paused as he neared the borders of RiverClan, He kept his ears and eyes attuned for passing patrols as he carefully hid himself among the bushes at the edge of the thunderpath. His first goal would be to fish in the great stream passing through riverclan. From there he would make his way to hunt at the twoleg nest sheltered deep in shadowclan, then onward to the old thunderpath of thunderclan. Lastly he would spend the night at the moon pool to reflect on his journey and to learn what starclan would tell him. This last had been suggested by none other than the clan leader and was by far the most troublesome of his goals.

He darted away from the bushes sensing himself free from prying eyes. He made his way, swift and sure, across the open field careful not to disturb the tall grass as he dashed toward the rivers edge. Once safely nestled within the reeds he began to delicate art of fishing. This was not one of his best skills and it was made worse by the need to keep his senses attuned for trouble. A patrol might come at any moment, and even as he thought this he slipped on the mud and slid up to his chest in the chill water.
He leaped back in a rush as the chill cut through flesh and bone.

This is not going to be fun........he thought to himself as he shook himself dry, his dangerous predicament momentarily forgotten.

Silverclaw was padding from the RiverClan camp, her mouth open to better taste the scents. Her clan deputy had told her to hunt for prey other than fish. This sent a flash of anger through her, bristling her fur and setting it on edge. She hated hunting the prey of the forest! It was the good of clans like ThunderClan and ShadowClan, not RiverClan! Her clan feasted on the bounty of the river, not tough, stringy squirrels!!

But she wouldn't question the orders of her clan. She was sent to hunt for the forest prey, and that was what she would do. She strolled slowly towards the edge of her territory, sniffing for WindClan patrols. She wasn't crossing the border, she wouldn't dare, but she still didn't want to be caught. A smell drifted towards her, mouse! With a smile on her face, she dropped into a careful crouch, placing a paw gently in front of her. She slid forward until she was directly behind the creature, and swiped a paw at it. It fell and she pounced on top of it, snapping it's tiny neck between her teeth. With a satisfied mrrow she kicked dirt over the dead animal.

She parted her jaws again, tasting the air. The reek of the thunder path landed on her tongue, and she flinched away. why is that smell so far from the path? I couldn't have travelled that far already. with a huff of annoyance, she turned toward the scent. Cautiously, she began to follow it. Sniffing ever few steps, she went onwards.

There was a sound like squelching mud, almost like a cat slipping. Brows furrowed, she stalked silently forwards. Mouth still parted to catch scents, she kept her ears pricked as well, listening for any change in the sound. As she stalked, she caught a faint scent on the breeze. It was hidden under the thunderpath's stench, but she could just make it out. Not enough to figure out what it was though. Quietly, she hid in a bush.

In front of her was a black and white cat, covered to the belly with mud, and seemingly unaware of her presence. Who in StarClan does this cat think he is? the white she-cat felt a growl rising in her throat, and had to fight to keep it in. She decided to watch what he did, instead of attacking head on, as she normally would have.

Blackfrost, for just a single instant, considered cleaning himself off. It was not that he disliked mud so much, but it was rather annoying once it had dried. That single moment was interrupted as a shiver passed down the length of his spine. Senses honed by moons of battle, patrol, and other less savory adventures sparkled into life. He sat erect for a moment. His keen eyes scanning the opposite bank of the river. His mouth parted to take in the more faint scents. Here he did his best to filter the rank odor that clung to him. This was the price sometimes paid via this method of stealth. Scenting nothing out of the ordinary he peered cautiously around himself, his ears perked for even the slightest out of place sound. Finding nothing out of place in his surroundings he crouched low for a moment listening yet more intently before bounding, swift and fluid as a fox, into the deeper reeds and tall grass lining this portion of the river bank.

He disappeared in the thicket making hardly a sound as he moved up stream a short distance.  He emerged into the open near the waters edge crouched low as if stalking prey. He listened intently to his surrounding his mouth parted only slightly in an effort to heighten his temporarily impaired sense of smell. He scanned the entire length of the bank until a sudden movement caught his attention. His paw darted into the water with lightening speed, flicking a small fish into the air, where he caught it in sharp fangs. It wriggled only briefly before his teeth snatched away it's life.  He felt a sense of joy well in his heart. No fresh kill was better than that which was taken from the mouths of another clan. Yet, this joy was somewhat diminished as he felt as if eyes burned into the very core of his spirit. Watching and waiting for him to fail. Perhaps starclan was watching, waiting their chance to avenge those he had sent to them prematurely. He dropped the fresh kill by the river bank and in his raspy whisper he spoke to the sky.

“ Do your worst StarClan, I eagerly await your challenge....” he mewed as loudly as he could manage, hardly reaching a note above the gurgling of the river.

Then once more he scanned his surroundings partly in search of riverclan and partly in challenge to the clan spirits above him. Seeing again no threat he purred to himself and began to search the waters edge for a small smooth round stone, worn flat by rushing water that he might deliver this to his clan leader. Yet he kept his ears alert for even the smallest sound.

Silverclaw backed away slightly when the cat stood straighter, but relaxed when he did. He scented the air, and Silverclaw was suddenly grateful for the mud clinging to his pelt. She followed him to the stream, her gaze turning to a burning glare when he caught a fish.

The cat muttered something that Silverclaw couldn't hear above the running water, but fury bubbled inside of her. She was suddenly extremely grateful for being downwind. With a yowl of rage, she leaped forward after he killed the prey. She pounced fiercely, landing on his back and raking her claws along his pelt.

"You filthy piece of frog-dung!" she screeched, "Get off RiverClan territory!" She hissed angrily, spitting as she bit into his scruff.

Blackfrost heard the yowl of rage and curled up his body into a crouch as the angry cat landed hard on his back. He felt claws rake through his fur but it was not a serious wound. He sized up his opponent as she screeched at him.

"You filthy piece of frog-dung!" she screeched, "Get off RiverClan territory!"
the she-cat hissed as she bit the scruff of his neck as if he were an errant kit.

“ Since when does riverclan allow kitty-pets in their ranks.” he hissed, his ears laying flat in aggression.

He sprang up powerfully knocking the she cat from her perch on his back. Blood ran down his sides warm and wet. The feel of it igniting his desire for battle. Before the she-cat could rise he spun toward her and swiped his claws across her face grazing her lightly. He backed away as best he could with the river behind him, keeping himself in a defensive posture.

“ I mean clearly you are no warrior.” he meowed in scorn. “ I will leave when I have had my fill of your fresh kill kitty-pet. Unless you think yourself capable of killing me. In either case I will not be leaving.”

Blackfrost hunkered low prepared for the life and death battle to come. He felt his fur rise in excitement. If he could overcome this warrior then he would be one step closer to his goal and riverclan one warrior weaker. Though he hated the clan cats with a fierce devotion, he could not help but to admire any strong adversary. His dark blue eyes filled with both pride and eagerness for violence. Every muscle ached for the aggression to come.

Silverclaw bit back a squeal as she landed with a thud, dazed for a moment. She just regained control of herself when the cat scraped his claws across her face lightly. She let out a hiss, leaping up and shaking out her fur.

"Why don't you come and fight if you're so sure I'm not a warrior?" she hissed back, fur bristling, "RiverClan will cease to exist when I let another cat steal our prey!" With that, she jumped forward again, smacking him across the cheek with unsheathed claws.

"Why don't you say that again? See what happens?" she snarled, raising her paw to attack again, teeth bared

Black frost did not hesitate at her challenge. He lunged forward as her claws freed themselves from his face while she was still speaking and raising her paw for her second strike. He rushed forward with his full speed. Hooking his paws around her just beneath her shoulders. His claws bit deep into her back holding the two securely together as he rose lifting them both onto their hind legs.  His sharp fangs sought for purchase on her throat, sinking deep into fur and flesh below her jaw in an effort to both wound her and prevent the she-cat from biting him in return.

He could easily kill the she-cat in this position, if he bit too hard she would bleed out or have her wind pipe severed. He bit hard, hard enough to give this warrior a glimpse of her possible fate before twisting her to the ground and bounding away from her at full speed to where he intended to use the natural river boulders to ford the stream. He paused just for a moment at the first boulder a safe distance from his adversary.

“ Today you win the fresh-kill kitty-pet, I no longer wish to fight you I am on an errand of courage. You are fierce and you are stealthy. I will come back for your pelt one day. Perhaps by then you will have had the courage to hunt in the other clan's lands as well. I will watch for you in the wind clan territories for certain.” he meowed as loudly as he could muster. “ Till then give chase if you have the courage.”

With that he darted across the river aiming to head deeper into the riverclan's territory pausing only long enough to swiftly grab a pebble with his mouth.

Silverclaw let out a yowl when she felt the cat's weight on her back, his claws dug deep into her back while biting her throat. She wriggled around, trying to fling him off. Fur bristling, she twisted around, feeling his teeth sinking into her fur. Blood pooled out of her neck, and she let out a gurgled hiss.

"Get off!" she screeched, reaching up to scratch him across the face. Then suddenly, the weight was gone and the tom was racing away towards the river border. She expected him to turn tail and run back to his own territory, but it seemed he had other plans.

"Get out of my territory!" she hissed furiously, following right behind him. Though he was WindClan and much faster than her. She plunged into the river, her lips curled in a ferocious snarl. She slowed her pace, ducking behind the brush. She knew she couldn't catch him, and decided hiding was better.

Suddenly a squeal came from behind her, and Silverclaw's eyes grew wide with fear. Whipping around, not even bothering to keep silent, she saw a small russet colored kit.

"Silverclaw!" the kit called, "There's an intruder in our territory!" Silverclaw rushed towards the kit, hushing her with her tail.

"Redkit be quiet, I know he's here, and I'm trying to catch him, but I can't do that if you're meowing loud enough for ThunderClan to hear us!" the white she-cat whispered, looking down at Redkit with angry eyes. The she-kit shrunk away from her stare, her deformed back forcing her to wince.

"Redkit, you must get back to camp, this is a dangerous cat, I fought him once already. Don't even think about trying to fight him!" She warned, wishing to send her back to the camp. But she couldn't be sure whether or not the vicious warrior would try to attack the little kit.

"But I don't want to!" Redkit whined, then mumbled something about the medicine cat sending her for herbs.

"Then perhaps you should have found those herbs." Silverclaw pointed out, still in a crouch. Her tail lashed back and forth, her eyes searching the area for the black tom. She couldn't let him continue on in her territory! But she also couldn't leave Redkit to die.

“ Silverclaw!” …..”there is an intruder in our territory!”

The kits voice burst like a lightning flash in Blackfrost's ears as he quietly and quickly made his way through the brush. He quickly began to make is way toward where he had heard the kit call. More than anything he hated kits, they were the continuation of the disease and needed to be rooted out with extreme prejudice. However this one may have just gotten lucky. He search about for the two cats he knew to be present but being unable to find them he chose to step out into a clearing near where he had heard the loud call. There he used the full might of his broken voice.

“ Kitty-pet, let us make a truce! You may escort me to the edge of shadowclan territory! In exchange I will not hunt your kit friend. “ he meowed.

He knew this silverclaw was at least as sneaky a hunter as himself and he was prepared to fend off any sudden attack. While he waited a reply he kept his mouth open searching for the scent of a kit.

With a deep growl, Silverclaw drew the kit towards her with a sweep of her tail. Redkit let out a mewl in protest, but it was so quiet. Silverclaw drew her tail over Redkit's mouth, silencing the kit. "Redkit, be silent. I'll deal with this."

Silverclaw sat up straight, searching for the tom without moving. In a hushed voice, she muttered to Redkit "Okay, cover your fur in mud-that'll hide your scent-then go hide." Redkit nodded, backing away into the undergrowth. She padded around for a bit, keeping her senses aware for any sign of the intruder, before finding a puddle of drying mud. She kept her annoyed thoughts to herself, and plunged into the pool. The wet dirt sunk into her fur, and she immediately longed to clean it off, but she held her tongue.

Resisting the urge to shake the mud out, she slunk out of the puddle and into a bush. The mud tingled in her fur, making her shiver in disgust. But she held still, breathing slowly as she tried to hide herself.

"That will never happen, especially as long as you call me kittypet, you mouse-hearted piece of fox-dung!" Silverclaw yowled in reply, dropping into a crouch and stalking along a bed of reeds. She made her way towards a clearing, near where the voice had come from. Her nose twitched, and she stepped into the open.

"There you are." She hissed, her lip curling. She had hoped to sneak up on him, but that wouldn't be the case.

Blackfrost watched as the she-cat emerged into the clearing. Seeing no kit, he was sure the crafty-she cat had have hidden the wretch. He night be able to kill them both if he were quick, but there was also the chance of one or the other making it back to their camp. That would pose a serious problem. He was fierce but he could not take out a whole clan on his own. He also doubted he could hide himself from so many warriors at once. He decided to take a different tack.

He kept his senses alert and prepared himself for a sudden attack while he spoke.

“ yes, here I am ...Silverclaw.” he meowed“ I imagine you wish to end this as any true warrior would. However, I would like to postpone our battle. I have a mission of honor to complete. For this I will accept a humiliation. I would like to put off our battle for 7 sunrises. if you accept you will meet me at the horse place in the early hours before sunhigh and we will finish what we have started here. “

he waited her response mentally preparing to take this proud warriors life should it come to that. His muscles tense and ready to spring. He ears alert for any sound. His heart burning with the sense of disgrace that came any time he was forced to postpone a battle. He wanted to yowl with disgust at himself but he kept a cool look about him. It would not do any good to let his emotions get the better of him.
He studied his opponent knowing he would have to take her life quickly if they fought. Then he would have to find the kit and kill it before it got to riverclan's camp. This seemed a near impossibility but he would try never-the-less.

Silverclaw's eyes narrowed when the tom mentioned her name, silently cursing Redkit. She listened carefully to his request, straining to hear his raspy voice. She stared at him steadily, holding her head high. She didn't need to think for this answer, she knew exactly what she would say. As a proud RiverClan warrior, Silverclaw could most certainly not let any cat get away with hunting on her territory.

She held his gaze, opening her mouth as if about to speak. But she didn't, instead a ferocious hiss erupted from her vocal cords as she leaped. Teeth bared and claws out, she pounced from a stand-point, aiming for his shoulders. Once (if) she landed, she sunk her teeth into his scruff, raking her talons across his pelt. Through the fur in her mouth, she snarled "I will never let any cat hunt on my territory!"

her snarl was the answer he expected and though it was troublesome he could not help but respect the warrior. This is how any true warrior should respond. He felt the weight of muscle and bone as she landed on his shoulders. her teeth bit deep and her claws tore across his pelt. He could feel his blood seeping out. Silently he twisted hoping to catch his prey off balance and thus free himself from her attack.

Silverclaw hissed louder as she felt him twisting under her grasp, and struggled to hold on. After a few moments of this, she was flung off. She let out a ferocious snarl, and dropped to a low crouch. The white she-cat began to circle the black tom, swiping her paw at the air as if she could reach him from where she was-though she couldn't.

"If you think you can just waltz on into my territory, steal my prey, and get off scott-free, then you've something to learn!" She growled, baring her teeth. The sun glinted off of her sharp, unsheathed claws.

he had shaken the she-cat free and watched for his opening as she stalked about him in her fury.

"If you think you can just waltz on into my territory, steal my prey, and get off scott-free, then you've something to learn!"

He words brought an inward smile and he replied in kind.

" Glad you are not a coward.." Blackfrost hissed

He suddenly darted forward , swinging first one paw and then the second trying to catch a grip on her shoulder and chest that would allow him to over power the she-cat and place him in a vantage point that would allow him to sink his teeth into the soft skin at the base of her skull. He knew the she-cat would cut him on his way in but he was willing to suffer the wound should his attack succeed.

"Cowardice does not belong in the Clans!" she screeched, shrinking back so he would miss. One of his outstretched claws caught the fur on her shoulder before she could back away enough, and let out a yowl of pain. Luckily, it wasn't deep, the medicine cat would be able to heal her soon enough.

With a hiss of fury, she leaped at him again, aiming a swipe at his head. "Why don't you just get off my territory you useless piece of frog-dung?" she growled, baring her teeth.

She swiped for his head and he lunged forward allowing her swipe to land across his shoulders as he moved toward her. He aimed to entangle her and deliver a killing bite to her throat. He did not respond, a response to such a question was beneath him. He had made the only offer he had planned on and now he intended to deliver this she-cat to the starclan.
The moment those cowardly words had left her mouth his heart had filled with disdain. For a little he had thought her very nearly a true warrior. Now that she had begged for her life she was less than a kitty-pet. He doubted even starclan would accept such filth as this but what else could he do. He at least would make it quick.

"Only cowards go for a kill immediately!" She snarled, neatly dodging his bite, "Warriors do not kill in battle unless it is needed. That makes you nothing more than a rogue! Such actions do not belong in the clans of this lake!" Silverclaw let out another ferocious hiss, batting at his ears. She felt like a mentor scolding an apprentice when she spoke those words, as if he had only mistakenly brought the wrong moss back for the elders, rather than an enemy warrior imaging her territory.

Silverclaw's tail lashed back and forth, sending a batting paw at his ears, "If you were truly a warrior, you wouldn't even be on RiverClan land! You would know that hunting on another Clan's territory is against the Warrior Code." The white she-cat growled, baring her teeth.

"Only cowards go for a kill immediately!"

"Warriors do not kill in battle unless it is needed. That makes you nothing more than a rogue! Such actions do not belong in the clans of this lake!"

"If you were truly a warrior, you wouldn't even be on RiverClan land! You would know that hunting on another Clan's territory is against the Warrior Code."

Silverclaw easily evaded the killing blow he had carefully planned. The she-cat was as water from which her clan took it's name. Her words were each punctuated with a slash to the ears. He felt as if he were a kit being toyed with. He backed away fearing any further damage to his ears.

“ The warrior code? What use is that to any cat?” he hissed angrily “killing your opponent is the only way to ensure continued weakness in an enemy. I am no warrior I am a killer!”

he lunged at her again angling to get atop her back.

“ Show me that I am wrong if you can, or die like all the others I have faced!” he hissed as he pounced at her.

"Than as a killer, you shouldn't be apart of the clans!" Silverclaw retorted, feeling him land on her back. "Coward!" Lip curled up, she snarled at him, pushing up. She dug her claws into the ground, lifting her back. Fur bristling, she let go of the ground and jumped upwards, twisting in the air. She aimed to land on his back, claws extended. She despised the fact that this cat dared call himself a clan cat. Mouth open, she detected the covered sent of WindClan. Trust WindClan to take in a killing rogue

as soon as he touched the ground he darted away not allowing silverclaw to pounce atop him. he kept a bit of distance between them. She was an agile opponent and he wanted to analyze her method of fighting.

" You talk all of this fox dirt as if you know anything about the world. You are a fool silverclaw." he meowed " You offer nothing but proud boasting or curses and empty phrases befitting a kittypet. You know nothing about me or my clan, you are not even a brave enough warrior to venture beyond your mentors tail."

he felt ashamed for this poor and foolish creature. At the same time he could not argue with her prowess. For the first time he really did not want to kill this cat. he darted away at top speed. he was confused in his being and it was a feeling both alien and dangerous. he did not belong to the clans and he did not want to, but seeing silverclaw and hearing her words confused him. He hisses a curse under his breath as he fled deeper into the riverclan's lands trying to lose himself in the tall grass. This cat reminded him of windclan's leader and this was not good. They both granted confusion to his spirit challenging his beliefs.

Silverclaw bared her teeth, lip curling, "You talk a big game, why don't you fight like a real warrior? Or I suppose WindClan hasn't let you into any real battles, you fox-hearted waste of space!" She hissed, ignoring his kittypet remark. She was clanborn! The white she-cat was the complete opposite of those soft-furred twoleg pets.

She felt a twinge of sadness for this poor excuse of a warrior. He couldn't possibly belong in the clans, as long he continued to go against everything Silverclaw had learned since she was a kit. For, how could someone be a warrior if he didn't follow the Warrior Code?

(I have an idea!! Meow! We should have Lady and Blackfrost meet!)

Moontail traced Blackfrost's scent trail through the forest. That worthless cat was stupid enough to try and complete that plan of his. Honestly... she thought to herself. Why would our WindClan leader let a rogue like him into the clan? He's a killer, and ignores the Warrior code! At least Swiftstar was wise enough to send me after him to bring him back. I hope he hasn't reeked havoc on the other clans.

The grey warrior let out an annoyed huff and continued on her tracking, stopping when she reached RiverClan territory. The scent trail continued on past that, towards the river. Moontail sighed heavily and took tentative steps over the boundary line, determined to bring that rogue back safely.

once he felt himself safely away from that fox hearted she-cat he paused to lick his wounds. She had caused him more trouble than he imagined any cat could possibly cause. he would soon be at the riverclan border and for this he was thankful.
He shook his head, he would need to be much more concerned with stealth. he did not want to run into another crazed she-cats in the other clan lands. he winced a little at his own cowardice. Since when was he concerned with such stuff?? He shook his head again, he had no idea.

The grey WindClan warrior tracked him for a relatively long time, being especially wary of RiverClan patrols. There was a strong recent smell of RiverClan and it was making her nervous.

Finally she spotted him and rushed over, trying to be as silent as possible. "Blackfrost!" she hissed in an angry whisper, her ears lowered.
